•••    oh today
if troubles cast a shadow
and shadows make the sun afraid to stay
why, it's okay
cause there'll be sunshine shining
and we'll find a silver lining
another day

little bits of wisdom from the rescuers. I really love that movie. it's better than a security blanket. tomorrow is another day . . .
(and no, I don't have the recalled collector's edition. sorry. :)

•••    have you read swallowing tacks today? you should.

•••    my current favorite blog name: randomonium. random pandemonium! isn't that great? as an added bonus, demitria monda thraam is a very entertaining blogger. yay.
11:37 PM +

•••    I was surfing the web doing research and I came across this article on butterfly mating strategies. did you know butterflies can see wavelengths in the ultraviolent spectrum? and that males and females look different in ultraviolet? I want butterfly eyes! (okay, I know. I'm a geek. shush.)

•••    firda wrote me a poem! yay!

she says, "The first that came to my mind when I heard the word 'wockerjabby' was 'jabberwocky'. I think 'wockerjabby' has no meaning, but it's very catchy indeed."
I have found myself explaining the (lack of) meaning of wockerjabby a lot in email, so I might as well just post it here.
firda is right that it's derived from jabberwocky, which is a wonderfully nonsensical poem that everyone should read. I always thought that a true reversal of jabberwocky - wockyjabber - would be a great word for describing random, offbeat babble (like the kind of stuff that is often coming out of my mouth, or at least rattling around in my head.)
I created this weblog completely on a whim one day, so I hadn't thought at all about what it should be called (or what it was going to look like or where I was going to keep it). "wockyjabber" popped into my head. I decided I wanted to preserve the vowel-sound ending, and keep the j and y separate for aesthetic reasons (I have strange artistic sensibilities sometimes). so, wockerjabby. the word itself has no meaning except as the name of my blog.

now that you're done with all that, go read firda's poem, and then write to her and tell her how much you like it. :)

•••    can I practice?
no.
even if I don't tackle?
no.
even if I don't come into any contact with any other player?
no.
can I run lines?
no.
can I run at all?
no.
can I do anything even remotely aerobic?
no.
can I catch the ball?
no.
can I kick the ball?
only if you walk over to it afterwards.

aaaaaaaaah! I know my head was a little messed up, but this is ridiculous. why did I sign my life away with that "I understand that rugby may cause severe head injury or death and I promise not to sue anyone" paper if I don't get to take advantage of it?
6:51 PM +

•••    if I wear my rugby clothes to practice, they'll have to at least me run lines or practice kicking, right? sigh.
4:12 PM +

•••    in music today I was trying to figure out how to schedule my time for this weekend, and failing pretty miserably. there is way too much stuff going on. smack me if I ever complain of boredom again. . . at least in the near future. :)
4:04 PM +

•••    it's a beautiful, beautiful day! all the birds are singing. the sun is shining. the flowers are blooming. one of those days that just makes you happy to be alive . . .

wednesday, march 22

•••    close - it's more like "rah-bee." like the things that buzz and make honey. :)
7:34 PM +

•••    the counter on this page, which has been up for ten days, has now surpassed the counter on my home page, which has been up (intermittently - nedstat is evil) for two and a half months. scary!
5:49 PM +

•••    something I don't understand: if you get a grade 1 concussion, you have to sit out for twenty minutes after symptoms subside. if you get a grade 2 concussion, you can't play for at least a week. a week! is there nothing in between? I have a game in three days. . .
3:11 PM +

•••    could nasa really be this stupid? even on earth you don't drive anywhere without working brakes. I'm so depressed now.
1:58 PM +

•••    now that my name is all over the web, I feel compelled to teach everyone how to pronounce it. indulge me for a moment.

"rabi" is phonetic in most languages that aren't english. ;) it is pronounced essentially the same way you would say "robbie," only a little more "ah" and a little less "au." make sense?

I adore my name - it's pretty unique. and when it does turn up in other places, it's usually something fun.

I'm an eighteen year old college freshman.
I am not a dead nobel laureate.
(or a dead guru.)
I was never captured by hussites.
I am not an island inhabited by banabans.
I do not have anything to do with the birth of the prophet.
I am not a robot (though I am interfaced with external computers much of the time. :)

now, back to your regularly scheduled blogging.

tuesday, march 21

•••    I really don't know what this is, aside from being addicted to straight lines, but it's fun to watch. mesmerising (and a little nauseating, perhaps).
11:42 PM +

•••    I love love love love the new font at eleven seconds! spiffy.
10:44 PM +

•••    hey hey . . . new time stamps! as if you really cared what second it was. time to update the archives.
10:13 PM +

•••    chandra discovers superman in space.
5:12 PM +

•••    rick scully lives in apartment 820 and he reads my star trek reviews. I love the web. (the sunsets over washington dc are a definite must-see, by the way.)
3:56 PM +

•••    blogging has obviously destroyed my brain already. this is all I could think about during 20th century music: if a weblog is called a blog, then would webloglog be a glog? guh.

monday, march 20

•••    keith brown is all pretty and springified.
7:50 PM +

•••    in case you ever want to get into an argument about how many intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations there are (that could possibly communicate with us), the drake equation calculator will let you know where you stand.
3:57 PM +

•••    brown & williamson has changed the message on its service line. now you too can be serenaded, just by calling 1-800-578-7453. even more entertaining than the little kitten thing!
12:25 PM +

•••    a fan of rugby and calvin and hobbes? be still my heart.
10:46 AM +

sunday, march 19

•••    actually, my feelings weren't hurt - after all, I think eleven seconds and digital swirlee and weblog wannabe are all great blogs - that last post was meant mostly as slightly tongue-in-cheek commentary on the state of the weblog world. . . and as an excuse to find some "obscure blogs" to link to, because I like discovering new things.
I would also like to point out that I'm a she, not a he. ;)
8:38 PM +

•••    mark thinks that weblog wannabe and digital swirlee and eleven seconds are not that popular. not that popular? maybe not compared to the webcelebs, but they're hardly unknowns in the blogging world. you want to meet some of the weblog commoners? the ones who toil away in obscurity without so much as a sideways glance from the bourgeoisie?

try what's new?, where ryan ponders how to penetrate the weblogging world of little, colored data.
or another singing pig, where things are let to express themselves.
or arbitrary productions, which is brand-gnu.
and hey, I know of this little blog called wockerjabby . . . :)
1:46 PM +

•••    tonight (last night actually, since blogger is convinced it's already the nineteenth) I went to an acapella concert hosted by our amazing and wonderful sixteen feet. it was really fun even though I was feeling pretty dazed. there were three other groups, too - the amalgamates from tufts, the xtension chords from u of illinois, and a group from stanford whose name I can't remember. (it's the concussion, really. :P) the xtension chords were really great, and they did a nice long set, including a very pretty version of "insomniac" by the virginia gentlemen. one of the things I love about male acapella groups is that there is always a huge size difference between the members (gotta have vocal chord length variation!) and it's just so much fun to watch a little guy dancing around next to a person who's a foot and a half taller. hehehe. :)
